AllMusic Review by

This Snapper/Recall two-disc anthology of the great New Orleans jazzman Sidney Bechet is light on information, but very, very strong on music. There are some notes and most of these recordings are from sessions recorded in the 1920s, '30s, and '50s. The sound is more than acceptable, and the selection is fantastic. Bechet was in the shadow of Louis Armstrong, but was nonetheless a great innovator who inspired Steve Lacy, among others, on the soprano saxophone. His soloing to the end was imaginative and tight, and he possessed a complete grasp of complex rhythmic patterns and dynamics.
