Three of Count Basie's alumni (altoist Earle Warren, trombonist Eddie Durham, and bassist Jimmy Lewis) team together with pianist Don Coates and drummer Clarence "Tootsie" Bean for a set of music dominated by Count Basie-associated material. It is a particular pleasure to hear Warren and Durham at this late stage in their careers. It had been quite a while since Warren (who takes five vocals) had recorded as a singer, and Durham had been off records for a long time. Nothing that unusual occurs (one wishes that they had added a trumpeter, say Harry "Sweets" Edison), but this historical set always swings.
