It may sound redundant to say it, at least to anyone familiar with the nature of Ral Donner's career, but this two-CD, 39-song collection would be, for Elvis Presley fans, the greatest body of songs that the King of Rock & Roll never cut. All of the hits are here, of course, and Donner's version of "The Girl of My Best Friend" is still impressive, but it's impossible to escape the influence of Elvis anywhere on this set. All of it is material released by Gone Records during the most successful period of Donner's career, and most of the material reveals a level of care in its selection that matches (and maybe even exceeds) the care taken by Presley and company. Six unissued tracks are present, all as good as what did show up, and a proper sessionography accompanies Bob Hyde's excellent notes.
