Released in 1989, this generous two-disc compilation contains many of Luther Vandross' singles from the '80s. The "problem" is that Vandross was operating at such a consistently impressive and prolific level during this period that he churned out many more quality recordings than can fit on a collection of this size. With that caveat, however, Best of Luther Vandross is an excellent overview of the singer's '80s work, hitting most of the essential highlights. Those tracks include "Here and Now," the song that finally helped Vandross cross over to the pop charts, and "A House Is Not a Home," the singer's superb cover of the Bacharach-David tune. Vandross knew how to balance vibrant, uptempo tunes with midtempo songs and passionate ballads, and all of these, of course, are graced by his rich, technically dexterous voice. Adult contemporary and quiet storm R&B gathered a lot of momentum in the '80s and '90s; and Luther Vandross -- as heard here -- was one of the best and most influential practitioners of the style.
