AllMusic Review by

Returning to their home base of Austin, Texas after a sojourn in Nashville, Tennessee, the ex-pat progressive bluegrass quartet the Greencards gently expand their horizons on their 2013 album Sweetheart of the Sun. Produced by Gary Paczosa, who has previously worked with Alison Krauss and John Prine, Sweetheart of the Sun dials back some of the adventurous elements of its 2009 predecessor Fascination -- there are no reggae rhythms here -- it's hardly conservative, even if the tone is hushed. The quietness of Sweetheart of the Sun is an attribute -- it draws the listener in, makes them want to listen closely. Here, the instrumental virtuosity of the band takes a back seat to the songs themselves and they're gorgeous, insinuating things; this music soothes and comforts, then it provides sustenance.
