AllMusic Review by

Jim Buchmann, best known as a clarinetist, also plays alto, tenor, bass sax, and saxello on this spirited set. The music is mostly trad with touches of swing, teaming Buchmann with cornetist Davey Jones; trombonist Harold Johnson; pianist Ed Metz Sr.; Johnny Baier on banjo and guitar; Dave Gannett on sousaphone and electric bass; and drummer Ed Metz, Jr. The Dixieland-oriented set is highlighted by "Shine," "Never Swat a Fly," "Wolverine Blues," and "Panama," mixing together trad war-horses with some offbeat material (including "Melancholy Serenade" and Sidney Bechet's "Blackstick"). The music is quite fun, and makes one wonder why Jim Buchmann is not better known. Well worth searching for.
