In addition to Rolling Stone-affiliated volumes and assorted condensed variations on the same theme, Time Life's Sounds of the Eighties series also spawned year-specific discs, each of which takes a fairly broad swipe at mainstream hits with little concern for stylistic cohesion. The 1984 installment features Billy Ocean's "Caribbean Queen," the Pointer Sisters' "Jump (For My Love)," Deniece Williams' "Let's Hear It for the Boy," the Romantics' "Talking in Your Sleep," and Sheila E.'s "The Glamorous Life." Not that anyone can have too much Ray Parker, Jr. in his or her collection, but this is the third straight volume to include Parker; the series could use a little more variety now and then.
