In 1995, Rhino supplemented their excellent 15-volume Didn't It Blow Your Mind series with five additional volumes of '70s soul hits. Instead of following the series' chronological constraints, Vol. 16 plugs in important gaps from 1970 to 1974. The Stylistics' sweet "Betcha by Golly, Wow" and Tower of Power's majestic "You're Still a Young Man" are the blue-ribbon selections here, along with less widely known hits from the O'Jays, Johnnie Taylor, Moments, the Staple Singers, and Al Green. The opening selection, Clarence Carter's saccharine "Patches," is the only questionable inclusion; it's one of a very few songs in the entire 20-volume set that could conceivably be included on Rhino's kitsch-happy Have a Nice Day! series.
