Soul Classics: Best of the 80's is dominated by female vocalists, with the ladies taking the lead on seven of the 12 songs. Jocelyn Brown's "Somebody Else's Guy" is one of the better pure disco tunes recorded, and Aretha Franklin's "Jump to It," written by Luther Vandross, is a prime piece of urban soul. When you hear Mica Paris' lovely voice on "My One Temptation," you know you're in for a good time. The men hold court with Rick James exhorting his lover to "Give It to Me Baby" over a funky beat, while the Gap Band's "Early in the Morning" is a smoker with a positive message for lovers on the rebound. A good CD for people looking for the hits.
