AllMusic Review by

Part of Nascente's excellent, much-needed series of Latin two-fers from the deep vaults of the Fania/Tico family of labels, Son con Guaguanco/La Excitante reissues two of the best fiery original albums from Cuban dynamo Celia Cruz. Both were recorded for Tico during the mid-'60s, and include some of her best work after leaving La Sonora Matancera. Son con Guaguanco, from 1966, is an out and out party record, with fiery work by the Alegre All Stars in a supporting role. The latter, recorded in 1968, shows off a greater range by including mambos, boleros, and a merengue tune. The package is lovingly crafted, and Nascente's series of Back2Back reissues has to qualify as a high point in the heretofore neglected reissue campaign of great Latin music.
