AllMusic Review by

This "best of" collection draws its 14 selections from three Victor albums by tenor saxophonist Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis: Lock the Fox, The Fox and the Hounds and Love Calls. Although it would be preferable to acquire all three out-of-print albums (which represent the bulk of Davis' 1963-69 recordings), there are some strong performances including on this sampler. Lockjaw is heard as the only horn in a sextet with pianist Ross Tompkins and percussionist Ray Barretto, accompanied by a 17-piece big band arranged by Bobby Plater and on a combo date highlighted by two numbers ("The Man with the Horn" and "A Weaver of Dreams") in which he interacts with fellow tenor Paul Gonsalves.
