Cud never really got a single release of any kind in the States aside from the Cud Band EP, but promo copies of this cut from Asquarius surfaced, including a variety of UK tracks otherwise unavailable. Besides the brilliant tour de force of the lead track, with one of Puttnam's best vocals, there's a standalone UK A-side, "Purple Love Balloon." If the double-entendre of the title is snigger-worthy, the performance itself is another quick-paced, funk-touched winner, Puttnam as always a delicious singer and Dunphy's guitaring equally fine, especially in the instrumental break. Two interesting rarities round out the collection -- "Day by Day" is a cover of the noted track from the musical Godspell, given a straight read in alternately a quietly passionate and full-on performance. Then there's "Once Again," an Asquarius track appearing here in a fine new rerecording, with Dunphy's exquisite acoustic guitar as before the heart of a fantastic song.
