Folkways has long leaned toward documenting esoteric and forgotten styles of music. Ragtime and '20s jazz does have its followings but the audience for recordings of piano rolls has never been that large. Although piano rolls can be re-recorded in modern day, the stiff rhythms are sometimes a handicap to enjoying the music. This Folkways LP has new recordings of piano rolls from the '20s by Edythe Baker and eight other female pianists, none of whom are remembered today. The music is a historical curiosity with some of the songs not having been performed or even heard in decades.
