The Christian-rock giant Petra made its initial mark with quasi-metallic, Van Halen-style stomps for the faithful. But by now, Petra is balancing alternative rockers (exemplified by bandleader Bob Hartman's "Be Of Good Cheer") with roots-minded, acoustic-oriented material (such as the title track, which features guest vocals by Foreigner's Lou Gramm and Kansas' John Elefante). Yet at any instance, Petra is willing to throw such formulas to the wind. "Song Of Moses" and "I Love You, Lord" are built on multi-hued rhythm tracks worthy of Peter Gabriel, and "Holiest Name" is a striking, mid-tempo declaration that harkens back to Petra's hard-rock origins. PETRA PRAISE 2 is a diverse exploration of Petra's holy rock.
