In top form, the Amazing Crowns deliver a hot & fast concotion of punked-up rockabilly, but their distinction is a sound recalling the Misfits moreso than the Reverend Horton Heat. Payback Live!, like the previous snapshot(Holiday Bootleg) of the Amazing Crowns, provides all the audience interaction and greasy-haired frenzy of a live show. However, a better view of their background appears here, with versions of the Johnny Cash-inspired "American Nitemare" by the Misfits, Naked Raygun's "Rat Patrol," and even Agent Orange's "Bloodstains." Unfortunately, another cover they often played live around this time, AC/DC's "Sin City," was not included.
Most of the tracks here are taken from their first at-one-point-self-titled album, while "Perfect Sin" and their anthemic "Halos & Horns" would appear on the second album, Royal. One point of interest here is that the performances are far more spirited and white-hot than what would be put to tape on Royal. Recorded only a year after the rare Holiday Bootleg, as well as the same town(Providence, RI), this album provides a wonderful document of the Amazing Crowns at their best.
