AllMusic Review by

The Old School Love Songs box set gathers Thump Records' five single-disc budget-line compilations and simply packages them all in one cardboard slipcase. The series is devoted mostly to R&B ballads from the '70s and '80s, though there are some up-tempo numbers and a few that don't really qualify as love songs (the O'Jays' "Back Stabbers," the Ohio Players' "Fopp"). Since these are budget-line collections, the track listings skip around from era to era without much regard to sequencing or coherence, but it's a good way for listeners on a tight budget to pick up a host of (mostly) quality soul singles.
