While a collection named Music for Sleep may not seem too complimentary to the artists on it, this double-disc compilation does present two discs' worth of restful classical and new age pieces that would make a nice soundtrack to a long nap. Disc one features compositions by Mendelssohn, Barber, and Chopin, as well as two selections from Holst's Planets: "Venus, Bringer of Peace" and "Neptune, the Mystic." Though pleasant and relaxing, most of these pieces are too intricately lovely to be sleep-inducing. However, the elongated melodies of Albinoni's "Adagio in G Minor" and Elgar's "Sospiri, Op. 70" do encourage drifting off into a daydream -- or dreamland. The second disc features two new age pieces that, while still melodic, are much more soporific; considering the album on which they're included, that's a compliment. "Hidden Beauty" goes so far to suggest a peaceful night that it includes chirping crickets with its atmospheric synth washes; likewise, "Kiss Good Night," with its drawn-out, droning melodies and chirping birds, is another soothing mix of natural and musical elements. Though much of Music for Sleep is too pretty to sleep through, the collection makes appropriate background music for other relaxing activities as well.
