Despite its straightforward title, Modern A Capella is a surprisingly clever mix of songs by contemporary a cappella artists and pop groups exploring a cappella territory. From Bobby McFerrin's "I Feel Good" to Ladysmith Black Mambazo's "Unomathemba" to Todd Rundgren's "Mighty Love," the album blends jazz, pop, rock, world, and folk a cappella songs into a cohesive, yet eclectic, collection. Rockapella's "Zombie Jamboree," the Nylons' "Silhouettes," and the Bobs' "My Husband Was a Weatherman" are some of the songs you'd expect to find on a collection like this, but the Housemartins' "Caravan of Love," Yes' "Leave It," and En Vogue's rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner" give Modern A Capella the twist it needs to truly live up to its title. A fresh, fun collection that reaffirms how striking -- and versatile -- a cappella singing can be.
