AllMusic Review by

Ranging from jump blues to rock & roll harmonies, this 41-track collection of Mercury R&B makes for a fine, if less-important, companion to similar offerings from the powerhouse Atlantic label. In lieu of important sides by the likes of Ray Charles and Big Joe Turner, though, Mercury can boast of some latter-day highlights from R&B innovator Louis Jordan, a fine stock of early Dinah Washington blues swing, and the dulcet doo wop of Clyde McPhatter. And that's not to forget some truly fine yet often overlooked '40s and early-'50s scorchers and gems from Buddy and Ella Johnson and bar-honking tenor saxophonist Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson. A wild but highly enjoyable ride.
