AllMusic Review by

This CD has 26 performances recorded by the Victor label during its "field trips" to Memphis, TN between 1927 and 1930. The program can easily be divided into three. Cornetist Charley Williamson and pianist James Alston back singers Sadie McKinney and Arah "Baby" Moore in addition to performing four numbers (plus four alternate takes) with Williamson's Beale Street Frolic Orchestra (a hot sextet). The Memphis Stompers (which a little later would be known as Snooks' Memphis Stompers) plays some fine numbers during 1928-1929. The CD concludes with the first two songs "("In Dat Mornin'"" and "Sweet Rhythm") released under Jimmie Lunceford's name; the nucleus of his successful orchestra was almost in place. Overall, these sessions cast some light on regional jazz of the late '20s and should delight '20s collectors.
