AllMusic Review by

McGuinn's Folk Den, Vol. 4 is the fourth in a series of low-priced recordings of traditional folk music Roger McGuinn made available online at www.mp3.com/mcguinn, and it is the best one so far. Sound quality has occasionally been iffy in the series of short CDs, but that is not a problem here, and, at 35 minutes, this is the longest of the discs. McGuinn overdubs his vocals and several different instruments, especially acoustic guitar and banjo, and he even breaks out his 12-string electric Rickenbacker on a couple of tracks, notably "If I Had Wings," which gives the music a Byrds-like feel. He has also expanded his concept of traditional folk music to include standards such as "Star Spangled Banner" and "Auld Lang Syne." Anyone who enjoyed the sound of McGuinn's reedy tenor over his 12-string guitar in the Byrds subsequently will like the McGuinn's Folk Den series, and, though this is the fourth one, it does not find him running out of songs to cover -- quite the opposite. If you want to buy one of these albums to see whether you will like them all, start here.
