The great flugelhornist Clark Terry teams up with Ernie Wilkins (doubling on alto and tenor), pianist Marty Harris, bassist Victor Sproles and drummer Ed Saple for the first of two CDs taken from a performance at Ratso's in Chicago. The music (released for the first time on this 1995 CD) is reasonably well-recorded, and C.T. is in top form. The quintet, which gives Wilkins a rare opportunity to really stretch out, performs five songs long in Terry's repertoire, including "Secret Love," "On the Trail" and his own "One Foot in the Gutter." Terry's enthusiastic playing excites the crowd, and both CDs are easily recommended to his fans.
