After some eight years at home in Australia, Daevid Allen returned to London in 1988 and, he said later, that too felt like a homecoming. Certainly it inspired him to get his musical career back on track -- although sundry archive releases from his Australian sojourn prove that his talents were firing as strong as ever, his activities during that period were marked by a singular lack of ambition. Back in London, on the other hand, his ambitions themselves knew no limits, as this CD effortlessly demonstrates. Recorded live at the Old Tabernacle off Portobello Road in London at one of the first shows Allen had played following his return, Live in 1988 catches him reuniting on-stage with Gilli Smyth and digging deep into his own back pages for material dating back to Gong and beyond. But even more than the music, it is the sheer sense of joy that radiates from the performers that makes Live in 1988 such a marvelous CD, an experience to relive again and again.
