The album is called King Khan: Songs from the Films of Shahrukh Khan, and the packaging is full of pictures of Khan, a major Bollywood star. But that is not to say that Khan actually performs on the disc itself; he does not. Rather, this is, as the title says, a collection of songs featured in films in which Khan appears, which is to say that the organizing principal of the anthology is not itself musical, any more than an album of songs that happened to have been used in films starring Tom Cruise. Of course, Khan's Bollywood efforts are somewhat more compatible with each other musically than Cruise's might be, and in fact, the songs here hang together as a fairly representative set of Bollywood tunes. The basic style is a souped-up version of traditional Indian music, underlaid with a heavy dance/disco rhythm track. Many of the same singers turn up repeatedly, notably Lata Mangeshkar and Udit Narayan, who are each on several tracks and even appear together on two. The composers mix in other musical styles: "Ruk Ja O Dil Deewane" has something of a Caribbean island feel, while "Ek Shararat Hone Ko Hai" uses a reggae-like syncopated rhythm; "Bhool Ke Din" has elements of American country music and even boasts a virtual square-dance section; and the lengthy "Meri Payal Bole" includes a twangy guitar part, a tabla solo, and even a passage that suggests bagpipes. Noted Bollywood composer A.R. Rahman's "Khamoshiyan Gungunane Lagi" seems to incorporate some traditional film scoring midway through. There is even relief from the otherwise incessant dance beats on the final number, "Kya Khoya Kya Paya," a ballad sung by its co-author, Jagjit Singh. Shahrukh Khan may have only a coincidental relationship to all this music, but he serves as the poster boy for a typically varied sampling of contemporary Bollywood movie songs.
