Pianist Keith Ingham's New York 9 features a superior four-horn front line consisting of clarinetist Ken Peplowski; trombonist Dan Barrett; the very versatile Scott Robinson on tenor, C-melody, baritone saxophones, plus alto Normaphon (!); and cornetist Randy Reinhart. The swing-oriented music (which has some Dixieland-ish choruses here and there) includes individual features for Robinson (playing baritone on "Love Is the Thing"), Barrett, Ingham, Reinhart ("Pete Kelly's Blues"), and James Chirillo (who takes "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" as a guitar solo). The joyous ensembles and distinctive soloists make this CD one of the most highly recommended of Keith Ingham's recordings.
