AllMusic Review by

Personal charisma and creative exploration define Dina Ugorskaja's elegant reading of Johann Sebastian Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier, Books I & II, which is presented on five CDs in this box set from BR Klassik. Ugorskaja's variety of expressions and subtle gradations of touch and dynamics keep the music fresh, vigorous, and spontaneous, and her playing seems effortless because of her graceful lines and smooth phrasing. The marketplace offers many first-rate versions of the Well-Tempered Clavier on piano, so Ugorskaja's recording faces considerable competition, though her style of playing stands out for its originality and depth, and her fluid playing may remind some listeners of Angela Hewitt, another thoughtful and innovative interpreter of Bach. Ugorskaja recorded "The Great 48" in 2015 in collaboration with Bayerischer Rundfunk and CAvi-music, and the recorded sound is close-up and detailed, with just enough resonance to give the piano a natural presence.
