Unlike his contemporary Buddy Rich, drummer Louie Bellson could be perfectly happy playing quietly in a trio setting. This out-of-print direct-to-disc LP (originally put out by Discwasher) is not all that sleepy, for Paul Smith was always a powerhouse pianist. The group (which also includes bassist Ray Brown) explores eight standards, alternating stomps and ballads and displaying plenty of energy. Highlights include "The Lady Is a Tramp, "On a Clear Day" and "Lover."
