Rhino's Instrumentals features 16 instrumentals Ray Charles recorded between 1953 and 1970, culled from ten different albums for a variety of labels. These don't just feature Charles on the piano or organ -- there are several cuts that feature him on the saxophone. Since it's divided between small-group and big-band sessions, the collection winds up being a little incoherent, but there's enough great music here to make such complaints quibbles -- for anyone who's only familiar with his hits and vocal cuts, it offers a valuable look into an often-neglected side of Charles' work.
