I Will Survive didn't quite make the country album Top 40 but is a typically fine effort from one of the most distinctive and consistently enjoyable country singers of the 1970s. Spears' cover of "I Will Survive," the Gloria Gaynor pop chart-topper from the previous year, was one of the album's three hit singles. It isn't Spears' only dalliance with R&B material -- she also turns in an excellent rendition of Arthur Alexander's "Every Day I Have to Cry Some." A version of Hot's "Angel in Your Arms" shows again how adeptly Spears can convincingly adapt pop and even disco material for the country field, in large part because of her pure country voice. "I'm Good at What I Do" is the kind of sassy, sexy love song either Spears or Loretta Lynn should have been able to make into a hit, and it is a compliment to note than the album's two other chart items ("Livin' Our Love Together" and "Rainy Days and Stormy Nights") are no better than their surrounding album tracks.
