The world was beginning to wake up to funk as a basic musical language, and one result was that the title track and "You Said a Bad Word" from this 1972 album became huge hits in both R&B and pop. What did the pop audience make of album tracks like "Bad Feet," let alone "God of Love"? Probably not as much as it could have, but these days, it sounds like a miraculous synthesis of gospel into the onrushing craziness of music's maddest decade.
