AllMusic Review by

An excellent clarinetist, saxophonist, and arranger from England, Sid Phillips was an important force behind the scene with Ambrose's orchestra in the 1930s, and, after serving in the RAF, led a variety of swing bands. Many of his finest recordings are on this definitive sampler. Four songs are combo sides from 1940-1941, while the remainder date from 1947-1950. Phillips, who sometimes also played high notes on the piano (while his regular pianist took the lower notes), had a hit with "Hors D'Oeuvres," and sometimes used that attractive two-piano sound behind vocalists, including most notably on "The Old Piano Blues" and "Birmingham Bounce." Other highlights of this 24-song swing set include "Copenhagen," "A La Mode," "Kitten on the Keys," "Johnson Rag," "That's a Plenty," and "My Sweetie Went Away."
