A fine pianist and composer who in the mid-'90s was based in Los Angeles, Cecilia Coleman plays modern hard bop music that swings but looks ahead toward freer explorations. On this disc, she performs 11 of her originals with an excellent quintet/sextet also featuring trumpeter Steve Huffsteter, Andy Suzuki on tenor and soprano, bassist Dean Taba, drummer Kendall Kay, and sometimes Dee Huffsteter on percussion. The music is fresh and unpredictable, but surprisingly none of Coleman's originals caught on and this quintet only lasted a couple years. Still, this small-label release is well worth acquiring. All of these musicians deserve greater recognition.
