The Starbucks compilation HEADING WEST: SONGS FOR THE ROAD delivers on the title’s promise by sounding like a great driving mixtape. Most of the music here falls under the indie-rock banner, with many songs having a rootsy slant. Highlights include Cat Power’s spare cover of the Moby Grape San Francisco hippie classic “Naked if I Want to” and Vic Chesnutt’s, spooky “Supernatural.” Both songs, as well as the rest of the album, effectively conjure the wide-open spaces and loneliness of America’s highways and byways.
