AllMusic Review by

It's telling that the best song on Grace Pool's self-titled debut album is one that they didn't write. An upbeat cover of "Stay," originally recorded by the Blue Nile, is the highlight of a rather dull LP. Released when alternative folk-rockers such as Suzanne Vega, 10,000 Maniacs, and Edie Brickell & the New Bohemians began graduating from college radio to commercial airplay, Grace Pool's light blend of acoustic strumming and synthesizers tastes like generic diet soda. Elly Brown has a pretty voice; unfortunately, she has little presence. "Awake With the Rain" has soaring harmonies and shimmering guitars à la the Adventures; however, the lyrics are uninspired. Other than the remake of "Stay," Grace Pool is audio wallpaper.
