This 24-song CD is about as much fun as a Jan & Dean compilation can be, although the reasoning behind it may seem a little elusive, since it overlaps about 50 percent with the earlier 26-song Legendary Masters (aka Anthology Album) collection. The difference is focus -- this CD (originally a double-LP) sticks to surf and car songs and stays away from any attempt at a historical portrait of the duo. It also delivers a lot of fun in the process, in the guise of songs such as "Surfin'," "Summer Means Fun," "Vegetables," "Surf City," "Ride the Wild Surf," "Sunshine Music," "Bucket T," and "I Get Around," among many others. Even the digressions into humor here ("One-Piece Topless Bathing Suit," "Schlock Rod," etc.) are some of the better examples from the duo's output. The whole album is guaranteed to bring a smile to the face of anyone listening, and the CD is a good transfer off the original master tapes, with a nice, close sound to the voices and the instruments. There are no notes to speak of, but none are really needed either.
