Without question, Tommy Ellison is one of gospel music's legendary figures. Before forming his current group, the Singing Stars, Ellison sang with such gospel notables as Edna Galmon Cooke, the Chosen Gospel Singers, and the Harmonizing Four. Ellison and the Singing Stars' 2002 Atlanta International records release, Going to See My Friend, is their first album of new material since 1997's Trust and Obey. The project features a nice balance of hard-driving traditional numbers with soulful ballads. The most attention-grabbing tracks are "Watch While You Pray," "Going to See My Friend," and a remake of the popular '70s R&B hit by the Manhattans, "Shining Star." This project represents the true essence of what has made this group a favorite within the genre of traditional quartet gospel music.
