AllMusic Review by

Taking its template from the old Appalachian string bands, bluegrass grew up in the late '40s and early '50s with the help of electric amplification, which allowed individual players to step out of the ensemble and deliver lead lines that were still audible. This double-disc, 56-track set brings together the early pioneers of the modern bluegrass sound and includes timeless sides from Bill Monroe (“Blue Moon of Kentucky”), the Stanley Brothers (“Man of Constant Sorrow”), the Louvin Brothers (“Knoxville Girl”), Flatt & Scruggs (“Foggy Mountain Breakdown”), and others, making it a fine introduction to the first flowering of commercial bluegrass music.
