Johnny Guarnieri's final recording, cut a year before his death, is the one he considered his finest. This solo date finds the classic swing pianist performing Billy Strayhorn's "Take the 'A' Train" and a dozen Ellington compositions, ranging from warhorses which he casts in a fresh light to the relative obscurities "Birmingham Breakdown" and "Mississippi Moan." A passionate rendition of "Caravan" is a highlight, helping to make this readily available CD a perfect introduction for listeners wishing to explore the playing of Johnny Guarnieri.
