Sometimes described as an American version of Fairport Convention the duo Parlor James -- comprised of Ryan Hedgecock and Amy Allison, augmented by a flexible group of musicians -- deliver a rustic, yet thoroughly compelling six-song (seven counting the hidden track) EP. Steeped in a traditional music styling, Allison's nasal twang and Hedgecock's lonesome tenor, at times resemble an Appalacian-sounding Emmy Lou Harris and Gram Parsons, as in Allison's forlorn ballad "Cheater's World." Mixing haunting originals, like Hedgecock's dark and powerfully driven "Devil's Door," with affecting readings of traditional numbers, such as "Snow Dove," and the hidden track "Cowboy Song," Dreadful Sorry leaves you wanting for more.
