For their first single release, the TriChromes tapped "Dice With the Universe," an original number co-written by bandmembers Neal Schon and Ira Walker with former Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter. The song itself -- as well as their live reading of the Dead's "New Speedway Boogie" -- is sluggishly unconvincing middle-aged rock. As soon as the band veers into improvisational territory, however, the music becomes far more interesting. Though Schon's guitar tone is pretty wimpy, and the band's rhythm section an approximation of funky, the music still manages to lightly swing, mostly thanks to former Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kretuzmann.
