In an attempt to resurrect his recording career, Tom Jones turned to country music in the early '80s. Darlin', his first attempt at string-laden country-pop, was also his most successful. Jones sounds revitalized for most of the record, breathing life into formulaic material like "Lady Lay Done" and "Dime Queen of Nevada." His energetic performance makes the record surprisingly effective and entertaining.
