Cupcakes hail from Chicago, IL. The group's four members are a seasoned bunch, having honed their skills opening for such larger bands as Veruca Salt, Cornershop, Citizen King, and Cibo Mato. Cupcakes' powerful mix of keyboards, guitars, drums, and pop vocals shines brilliantly on this self-titled debut album for Dreamworks Records. You can feel the power of the songwriting on such tracks as "Exaggerator," "Future Girls Future Boys," and "Welcome to the Candy Store."
CUPCAKES, produced by Stephen Street (Blur, The Pretenders, The Cranberries), displays an interesting diversity of stylings. Some songs rock out; others have a laid-back, somewhat trippy vibe ("High Speed Cakes In the Hole," "Deep Space Bossa"). The variety makes for an impressive mix and an eclectic yet strong album.
