The second of four pieces that together form the Proper box set Jazz and Velvet (but are also available separately), County Fair is devoted to transcription material, nearly all of it small-group features for Tormé. Transcriptions are, almost by rule, looser performances with muddier sound quality, which makes County Fair a relative lowlight of Tormé's early career. As a result, it's an easy one to skip for listeners who want only one or two of the four compilations that make up the Jazz and Velvet box set.
