Most of this excellent LP, the third in the six-volume series of Charlie Parker's recordings for Dial, is taken up by his comeback session; only his second recording date since being released from Camarillo State Hospital. Teamed with some of the top young modern musicians then in Los Angeles (trumpeter Howard McGhee, Wardell Gray on tenor, pianist Dodo Marmarosal guitarist Barney Kessel, bassist Red Callender and drummer Don Lamond), Bird is in superior form on "Relaxin' at Camarillo," "Cheers," "Carvin' the Bird" and "Stupendous;" 12 versions of these four songs are included. This LP concludes with three poorly recorded but historical excerpts from a jam session that features Parker (purely for completists). Overall this music (which is available for CD) is recommended.
