AllMusic Review by

Oscar Peterson's first two full-length big-band albums are reissued in full on this single-CD. The Swinging Brass date has arrangements for 11 horns plus Peterson's Trio (which includes bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen) while Bursting Out has the same trio joined by a large orchestra arranged by Ernie Wilkins. There are a couple of short spots for James Moody, Norris Turney and (on "Manteca") Cannonball Adderley but basically the two big bands back the trio. The performances are conservative, tasteful and melodic with Oscar Peterson showing off both his masterful technique and the tightness of his group. [Originally released on LP in 1959, a Japanese edition of on CD was issued in 1996.]
