The Dana Legg Stage Band is a standard modern jazz big band. Its music is sometimes funky and Mark Fechner takes a heated EWI (electronic wind instrument) solo on "Dawn's Awakening," but much of the music is hard bop. Nick Lane, who like trombonist Legg is from Iowa, contributed four of the arrangements/compositions while Legg wrote two. All of the other songs are of recent (mid-'90s) vintage except for the ancient "Lassus Trombone," one of five numbers that feature solos from the colorful Legg. Other key soloists include altoist Mark Fechner, trumpeter-flügelhornist Doug Schuler, and Gary Parker on alto and soprano. While few surprises occur, the musicianship is quite high and there is enough variety throughout the program to hold one's interest, with the medium-tempo blues "Big Blueser" being one of the highlights of this swinging set.
