Toni Brown's Blue Morning is a relaxed, meandering collection of folky country-rock, which isn't surprising since there's a number of luminaries from the San Franciscan hippie scene on the record and it was released on the Dead's own label, Relix. What is surprising is Brown's assured vocals, which are friendly but never lazy. And that's what makes her covers of the Flying Burrito Brothers and the Dead convincing, and it's what makes her originals worth a listen. Blue Morning isn't necessarily the kind of record that calls for repeat listens, but it sounds good while it's playing.
