This CD is a bit unusual in that it consists of five selections apiece from Billy Eckstine, Big Joe Turner and Johnny Otis that were left out of Denon's reissue of former two-LP sets on single CDs. Eckstine is heard singing and playing valve trombone with his combo on three standards and "Blues for Sale" in addition to performing "In a Sentimental Mood" while backed by a string orchestra. Turner belts out such tunes as "Careless Love," "Whistle Stop Blues" and "Howlin' Winds" in 1947 while Johnny Otis' numbers from 1950-51 feature vocalists Little Esther (on "Love Will Break Your Heart for You"), Mel Walker and Marilyn Scott. None of the music on this CD is essential but there are some good moments, straddling the boundaries between swing, blues, bop and R&B.
