AllMusic Review by

Though by no means definitive, the eighth volume in BMG's multi-part, budget-line overview of the big band sound of the 1940s is still a good introduction to the swing era -- while the omission of liner notes is endlessly frustrating, the overall sound quality is strong, and perennials like Count Basie's "Open the Door, Richard," the Three Suns' "Peg O' My Heart" and Vaughn Monroe's "Ballerina" never go out of style.
