Screenwriter/director Daniel Barnz's Beastly is a modern-day retelling of the Beauty and the Beast story, and it has generated two soundtrack albums, one featuring Marcelo Zarvos' background score and this "songs from the motion picture" various-artists collection of pop/rock songs heard during the film. Most of them are new, although the album is baited with Regina Spektor's "On the Radio" and the Vines' "Get Free." There appears to have been an attempt to cover the bases of current rock, coming up with derivative tracks such as Hanover Swain's "Vanity," a Lady Gaga sound-alike, and two songs by Raney Shockne featuring Jessie Mann that suggest Britney Spears. Mat Kearney's 2007 copyright "Breathe In, Breathe Out" is in a Coldplay/U2 mode, while Kristina & the Dolls' "Be Mine" recalls the goth rock of Evanescence and Army Navy's "The Long Goodbye" is a piece of catchy jangle pop. There's nothing very original here, but the hope is that a hit may emerge, if only through imitation of what's currently popular.
